Willunga Farmers Market seeks more producers

Willunga Farmers Market, (WFM) South Australia’s first farmers market, is seeking applications from Fleurieu Peninsula based food producers.

After working closely with the City of Onkaparinga, WFM has been granted a site extension, enabling the market to trade in the Willunga Library car park.

‘This site extension gives us the ability to host up to 10 more traders each Saturday,’ says Steve Ashley, WFM Market Manager.

‘That hopefully translates to 10 more households in the region being able to earn a living from food production.’

The market is currently seeking expressions of interest from Fleurieu Peninsula based producers, but does have the ability to host farmers from outside the region if they are farming a unique product that is currently unavailable on the Fleurieu.

‘This clause allows primary producers outside the traditional market catchment area the opportunity to trade at the market if they are growing produce that is currently unavailable on the Fleurieu, ensuring we have a diverse range of products available each week.’ says Mr. Ashley.

With an average of approximately 2,500 shoppers through the gates each Saturday, WFM provides a thriving retail environment, with provenance and support for the local community being key factors in attracting shopper expenditure.

‘This region is South Australia’s food bowl. With an increase in small scale farms and kitchen gardens we want to do everything we can to support the growth of sustainable farming, beginning with our own backyard,’ says Mr. Ashley.
