World leader in permaculture takes to farmers markets

Darren Doherty, one of the world’s most acclaimed permaculture specialists, is taking the shoppers of Willunga Farmers Market under his wing.

10:30am Saturday 24 May, Darren will take over the market square sharing his knowledge on permaculture design to achieve vibrant, sustainable food production.

The 5th generation farmer from Bendigo has shared his knowledge and designed permaculture systems across 5 continents, and more than 45 countries, 1600 farms and 12,000 people.

One of the largest projects Darren has worked on is for Mars Inc (yes, the mars bar creator!) in Vietnam, designing and managing a sustainable cacao agroforestry system research and demonstration farm.

Giving advice to Willunga Farmers Market’s Young Farmers Scholarship recipients when he visited the region with world renowned Joel Salatin in April, Darren was struck by the region’s commitment to fostering sustainable agriculture.

‘My main focus is to help people understand ways to farm & live that regenerates soils, farms, landscapes and communities.’ Says Darren.

‘The Willunga Farmers Market really embraces this philosophy and has gone the extra mile to see it grow in the Fleurieu Peninsula through their Young Farmers Scholarship.’

‘The thing is, farming is fun. It’s a joy, and we can provide food for the region while at the same time regenerating the environment. Ideally we will see the whole environment flourish around crops planted.’

Steve Ashley, WFM Market Manager says that education is the key.

‘This region is South Australia’s food bowl. With an increase in small scale farms and kitchen gardens we want to do everything we can to support the growth of sustainable farming, beginning with our own backyard.’ He says.
